Mizoram CM Zoramthanga submits resignation to Governor after party’s poll defeat

Mizoram Election Results 2023: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga submitted his resignation to Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan after his Mizo National Front (MNF) party was defeated in the Assembly elections. 

Speaking on the poll debacle, Zoramthanga said that he lost because of the anti-incumbency effect and people’s dissatisfaction with his performance. I accept the verdict of the people and I hope that the next government will perform well… The reason is the anti-incumbency and Covid onslaught,” he added. 

Zoramthanga loses by over 2,100 votes

According to the Election Commission (EC), Zoramthanga himself also lost to ZPM’s Lalthansanga by 2,101 votes in the Aizawl East-1 seat. The MNF has won nine seats and is leading in one, while the opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) secured a majority by bagging 27 seats in the 40-member House.

ZPM to stake claim to form govt

Meanwhile, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) said it will stake claim to form the government in Mizoram after holding a consultative meeting of newly elected MLAs and senior party leaders.

ZPM working president K Sapdanga said the meeting will be held on Tuesday and party leader Lalduhoma, who was in Serchhip, was travelling to Aizawl on Monday to meet the newly elected MLAs.

“A meeting of newly elected MLAs and Val Upa Council, the decision-making body of the party, will be held most likely on Tuesday to decide on claiming stake to form the government in Mizoram,” Sapdanga told news agency PTI.

ZPM, the Opposition party, swept the polls, winning 27 of the 40 seats, while the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, bagged 10 seats and was leading in one.
