Market Opening Bell: Sensex, Nifty bounce back, defence stock Garden Reach surges 12%
Sensex, Nifty Today: A day after nosediving, Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty bounced back and opened in green on Wednesday, i.e. on May 14, 2025, amid positive global cues. The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 130.27 points to open at 81,278.49, while Nifty was up by 35.45 points, starting the trading session at 24,613.80. In the last trading session, the Sensex closed at 81,148.22 and the Nifty 50 at 24,578.35. In the broader market, the BSE Smallcap and BSE Midcap indices started the session in the green and were up around 400 points.
From the Sensex pack, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, Eternal Infosys, and Tech Mahindra were in green in the opening trade, with Tata Steel surging over 4 per cent today as the company has announced that it has earmarked a capital expenditure of Rs 15,000 crore for its operations in India, the UK and the Netherlands in the current financial year. On the other hand, stocks like Tata Motors, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, Hindustan Unilever and Nestle India were in the red at the time of writing this news, with Tata Motors falling around 1.38 per cent.
In early trade, 1,903 stocks in the Nifty pack were trading in the green, while 466 were trading in the red. 56 stocks remained unchanged.
What did Gift Nifty indicate?
Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for the Nifty 50, indicated a positive start, opening in the green at 24,747, against the previous close of 24,636.
Asian Markets Today
Meanwhile, Asian markets traded mostly in green today as stocks on Wall Street rallied. The S&P 500 climbed 0.7 per cent. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 269 points, or 0.6 per cent, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.6 per cent.
At the time of writing the news, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down by 231.08 points and was trading at 37,950.84. However, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng climbed by 329.84 points or 1.41 per cent. Similarly, China’s Shanghai Composite was up 6.30 points to trade at 3,381.17.
How did individual sectors perform?
Major Nifty sectoral indices traded in the green today, with the Nifty IT gaining 0.46 per cent. Similarly, Nifty Metal was up by 1.09 per cent. However, the Nifty Auto index was down by 0.43 per cent.
