Sensex, Nifty Today: The Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, opened in the green on Wednesday, April 02, 2025, amid mixed global cues as markets brace for US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs, which will come into effect today. The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 121.77 points, or 0.16 per cent, to open at 76,146.28, while Nifty was up by 26.9 points, starting the trading session at 23,165.70. In the last trading session on Tuesday, the Sensex closed at 76,024.51 and Nifty 50 at 23,591.95.
From the Sensex pack, Nestle India, Power Grid, UltraTech Cement, and Larsen & Toubro were among the biggest laggards in the opening trade, with Nestle India losing around 2.25 per cent. On the other hand, stocks like Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Zomato, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank were in the green. Tech Mahindra was the top gainer on the BSE, up 1.30 per cent while writing the report.

What Gift Nifty indicated?
Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for equity market indices, indicated a flat start for the Nifty 50 as it opened in the green at 23,295 against the previous close of 23,285.50.
According to Dr VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, investors can wait for clarity to emerge regarding tariffs and market trends.
“If the tariffs are worse-than-expected, there can be another round of sell-off in the market. Even in such a scenario, domestic consumption driven sectors will remain resilient,” he said.
Asian Markets Today
Meanwhile, Asian markets traded mixed today and the US stock market edged higher on Tuesday. The S&P 500 rose 0.4 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1 per cent. The Nasdaq composite closed 0.9 per cent higher.
At the time of writing the news, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was up by 11.95 points or 0.05 per cent and Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 33.52 points or 0.09 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi was down by 6.93 points or 0.31 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite was in the green.
How did individual sectors perform?
Major Nifty sectoral indices traded mixed today, with the Nifty IT up by 0.41 per cent. But the Nifty Pharma was down by 0.37 per cent. Similarly, Nifty Metal fell 0.28 per cent, and Nifty Media was down by 0.83 per cent in the opening trade.
