KL Rahul creates history, breaks Virat Kohli’s all-time T20 record during DC vs GT IPL 2025 clash

KL Rahul has added another feather to his illustrious cap as he shattered a historic record of Virat Kohli in T20 cricket. Rahul achieved a massive milestone in the Delhi Capitals’ clash against Gujarat Titans.

New Delhi:

Delhi Capitals and India batter created history during DC’s IPL 2025 clash against Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday, May 18. Rahul, who has been in impressive form in IPL 2025, shattered a historic record of Virat Kohli in T20 cricket.

Rahul added another feather to his illustrious cap as he reached the mark of 8000 runs in T20 cricket. The 33-year-old has become the fastest Indian to get to the mark. He took only 224 innings to get to 8000 runs in the format, while Kohli had reached the mark in 243 outings.

Rahul is the third-fastest to the mark overall, only behind Chris Gayle (213 innings) and Babar Azam (218 innings).

Fastest to 8000 runs in T20 cricket:

1 – Chris Gayle: 213 innings

2 – Babar Azam: 218 innings

3 – KL Rahul: 224 innings

4 – Virat Kohli: 243 innings

5 – Mohammad Rizwan: 244 innings

Rahul needed only 33 runs to get to the 8000-run mark. He was sent to open alongside Faf du Plessis as DC went with the seventh opening pair in the season. The opening has been a problem for the Capitals, who have slipped down in the points table after being the trendsetters earlier in the tournament. Rahul has been the in-form batter for DC. He brought up yet another fifty-plus knock during the clash, his fourth in the season.

Meanwhile, GT captain Shubman Gill had won the toss and had opted to bowl first. “We will bowl first. Not easy to start all over again, but good rest for our pacers, KG comes back, and that is a positive for us. We’ve had a good run, but we have three games and we’re looking to win all of them. That’s the thing with every match, we have to start fresh, our fielding hasn’t been the best, but we’ve worked hard on it. We’re hoping that everyone will come back and perform, looks like a good wicket, plenty of high scores, just one change, Rabada comes back,”  Gill said at the toss.

“We too wanted to bowl first, but we’ll now look to post a good total. We’re taking one game at a time, not thinking too far ahead, not thinking too much about qualification, just taking it one at a time. I respect his personal decision (on Starc), but I want players to be 100% fit, just think about the plans. The same combination – three pacers and three spinners, Vipraj Nigam replaces Madhav Tiwari, Mustafizur replaces Starc,” DC captain Axar Patel said at the toss.
