The JDU has backed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, with Lalan Singh asserting that the bill will bring transparency and benefit Muslim women. He also accused the opposition of dividing people in the name of secularism and praised PM Modi for addressing past irregularities.
The Janata Dal (United) has extended its support to the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, with senior leader Lalan Singh stating that the legislation will bring transparency and benefit Muslim women. He dismissed opposition claims that the bill is anti-Muslim, asserting that Waqf is a trust created for the welfare of Muslims, and it should function fairly for all, irrespective of gender or financial status.
Singh also took a swipe at opposition parties, accusing them of “dividing people in the name of secularism” and attempting to mislead the public about the bill. “If you don’t like PM Modi’s face, don’t look at it, but at least acknowledge the good work he has done. In 2013, the sin you committed has been undone today by PM Modi, who has worked to bring transparency,” he said, without elaborating on the reference.
JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha had earlier expressed the party’s concerns, stating that the bill should not have retrospective provisions. However, he confirmed that JD(U) would support the bill if their concerns were addressed. Meanwhile, JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan Prasad noted that several party suggestions had been incorporated into the bill, leading the party to issue a whip directing MPs to vote in favor of the government.
The JD(U)’s stance on the bill signals its continued alignment with the BJP-led NDA government, despite past differences.
