
A 59-year-old man diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has passed away in Pune, marking the eighth death due to the rare neurological disorder. Earlier today, the first GBS death in Mumbai was reported, a 53-year-old man died at a Mumbai hospital. GBS is a rare condition in which a person’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, resulting in muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the legs and/or arms, as well as problems swallowing or breathing.
59-year-old died on Tuesday
The eighth death due to GBS syndrome in Pune is of a 59-year-old man, who suffered sudden cardiac arrest and died, on Tuesday. “The deceased was admitted to the hospital following weakness and inability to stand up.
A nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test was conducted and he was diagnosed with `acute motor axonal neuropathy’, a rare type of GBS that causes paralysis and loss of reflexes,” said a release from the Pune Municipal Corporation. The deceased was given `plasmapheresis’, a treatment for peripheral neuropathy.
GBS cases in Maharashtra
As per the officials, the total number of suspected and confirmed GBS cases in Maharashtra rose to 203 after five more infections were reported during the day. The count of confirmed cases is 176, and 20 patients are on ventilator support.
Among 203 GBS cases in the state, 41 patients hailed from the Pune Municipal Corporation area, 94 from villages that were brought under the PMC limits in the recent years, 29 from neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad township, 31 from Pune rural region and eight from other districts of Maharashtra.
Of these cases, 52 patients are in ICU and 20 are on ventilator, said a release from the state health department.
Mumbai reports first GBS death
Mumbai reported first death due to GBS today. A 53-year-old man has died of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) at a hospital in Mumbai. The patient, resident of Wadala area and working as a ward boy in a hospital, had a fortnight ago visited Pune which has witnessed the GBS outbreak. He was admitted to a hospital here on January 23. He was in a critical condition for several days and died on Tuesday.
Mumbai reported its first case of GBS on February 7 after a 64-year-old woman, resident of Andheri (East), was diagnosed with GBS.
