A swarm of cicadas on Wednesday delayed a White House press plane carrying dozens of journalists to the United Kingdom for US president Joe Biden‘s first foreign trip.
The flight was delayed by seven hours after Brood X cicadas disrupted the mechanics of the press plane. Weather and crew rest issues also contributed to the delay. The plane was later swapped for another one, and the flight took off shortly after 4am on Wednesday.
Even Biden wasn’t spared.
“Watch out for the cicadas,” the president told reporters. “I just got one. It got me.”
The president brushed a cicada off his neck after arriving at Joint Base Andrews for Wednesday’s flight. “Watch out for the cicadas,” the president told reporters. “I just got one. It got me.”
Washington DC is among the many regions in the US which have been swarmed by Brood X cicadas. The insects emerge from the ground every 17 years, and take to dive-bombing onto moving vehicles and unsuspecting passersby.
