NEW DELHI: An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck the Kermadec Islands region, located north of New Zealand, on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The quake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) USGS added. A tsunami warning was issued after the quake, the US Tsunami Warning System said. “Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter,” the agency says in a separate statement.
There is no tsunami threat to Australia, the country’s Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet.
