Toyota today launched its first mid-size SUV which is now also the most affordable strong-hybrid car in India. Currently, the prices start at Rs 15.11 lakh and go up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). These are for the top four variants of the car, which include the strong-hybrid and the mild-hybrid AWD variants. The prices of the entry-level trims will be announced soon. The Hyryder comes just a few weeks before Maruti Suzuki launches its own rendition of the car, the Grand Vitara, in India.
The Hyryder is the first mid-size in India to get a strong-hybrid powertrain. It gets a 1.5-litre TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine that makes 92 hp and 122 Nm of torque, paired with an eCVT gearbox. The engine is coupled to an electric motor that makes 79 hp and 141 Nm of torque, offering a combined output of 114 hp. The motor draws power from a 177.6V lithium-ion battery. Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 27.97 kpl.
Toyota Hyryder Prices (ex-showroom):
1.5-litre mild-hybrid MT AWD
V – Rs 17.09 lakh
1.5-litre strong-hybrid eCVT
S – Rs 15.11 lakh
G – Rs 17.49 lakh
V – Rs 18.99 lakh
The mild-hybrid version gets a 1.5-litre K15C engine that also powers the Brezza, XL6, and Ertiga. Available on the ‘Neo Drive’ variant, the engine makes 103 hp and 137 Nm, paired with a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The manual transmission gets an AWD as an option. This makes the Hyryder the only mid-size SUV in India to offer AWD (with the Renault Duster now off the market).
The Hyryder is available in four trim levels – E, S, G and V – and of the two engines on offer, the mild-hybrid tech will be standard across the range. The strong hybrid, meanwhile, is offered on the S, G and V trims. The AWD is only reserved for the top-spec V trim.
