

The prices of petrol and diesel have held steady again on Thursday, 5 January 2023 for over seven months now. The Central government reduced an excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre on May 21, 2022. The Maharashtra government also minimized the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 a litre and Rs 3 a litre, respectively. Following the same, the governments of Rajasthan, Kerala and Odisha also reduced VAT on petrol and diesel.
Currently, petrol price in Delhi is Rs 96.72 per litre, while diesel is retailing at Rs 89.62 per litre. Petrol and diesel in Mumbai are being sold at Rs 106.31 and Rs 94.27 per litre, respectively. In Kolkata, petrol price stands at Rs 106.03 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 92.76 per litre. Petrol price in Chennai is Rs 102.63 per litre and diesel is retailing at Rs 94.24 per litre.

Retail petrol and diesel prices vary as per freight charges, local taxes, VAT etc. Public sector Oil Marketing Companies, including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) update fuel prices daily at 6 AM according to international benchmark prices and foreign exchange rates.Source
