NEW DELHI: The pandemic couldn’t dampen Hyundai’s pace and the Korean automaker has put the Indian audience in the biggest dilemma and that is to choose the best one out of its two recent offerings- Venue and 3rd-gen i20. Although the cars belong to different segments, their pricing moves up the ladder parallelly with minor differences in the entry-level trims and the top-end trims.

Price
This aspect had to be brought up first as this is the biggest similarity between the two Hyundais and also because it is the root cause of the dilemma. The 3rd-gen i20 ranges between Rs 6.79 lakh – Rs 11.32 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Venue ranges between Rs 6.75 lakh – Rs 11.65 lakh (ex-showroom).
The petrol variants of the i20 range between Rs 6.79 lakh – Rs 9.69 lakh, while the diesel ranges between Rs 8.19 lakh – Rs 10.59 lakh and the turbo variants range between Rs 8.79 lakh – Rs 11.32 lakh. Coming to Venue, petrol variants range between Rs 6.75 lakh – Rs 8.38 lakh, diesel ranges between Rs 8.16 lakh – Rs 11.59 lakh and the turbo costs between Rs 8.52 lakh – Rs 11.65 lakh.
Not much of a difference here at all. The slight differences in the lower range and the higher range of both the cars will catch up when it comes to the final on-road expenditure. Engines
The second and quite important similarity between the two cars is what’s under their hood. Although the engines might be tuned a tad bit differently, they still remain quite identical and both the cars have 3 engines up for offer.
The 3rd-gen Hyundai i20 comes with a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine and a 1.0-litre Turbo GDi petrol engine. The petrol unit offers 83 PS of power and 114 Nm of torque when paired with a 5-speed MT and with an IVT transmission, it produces an additional power of 5 PS and offers the same torque. The diesel unit offers 100 PS of power and 240 Nm of torque and comes with a 6-speed MT alone. The turbo unit offers 120 PS of power and 171 Nm of torque and comes with either 7-speed DCT or 6-speed iMT.
The Hyundai Venue is offered with a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine and a 1.0-litre Turbo GDi petrol engine. The petrol unit offers 83 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque and comes with a 5-speed MT only. The diesel unit offers 100 PS of power 240 Nm of torque and is offered with a 6-speed MT. The turbo unit offers 120 PS pf power and 171.6 Nm of torque and is offered with either 6-speed MT, iMT or 7-speed DCT.
Not much of a drastic difference in the performance either. We are opinion on performance of i20 is yet sometime away, but is expected to be in lines with Venue. The iMT is offered in both which is still a unique feature in India. The i20 here gets an advantage as its petrol variant gets an all-new IVT transmission. But the Hyundai Venue also gets an MT version for its turbo variant, so the fight is evened out again.
Fuel Economy
The 3rd-gen Hyundai i20’s claimed ARAI mileage for the petrol (MT) is 20.35 kmpl, petrol (IVT)’s is 19.65 kmpl, diesel (MT)’s is 25.2 kmpl, turbo (iMT)’ is 20.25 kmpl and the turbo (DCT)’s is 20.25 kmpl. The Venue, on the other hand, boasts ARAI mileage of 17.52 kmpl for petrol (MT), 23.4 kmpl for diesel (MT), 18.2 kmpl for turbo (MT), 18.15 for turbo (DCT) and 17.8 kmpl for turbo (iMT).
The figures for the petrol and diesel units are quite similar but there’s a significant difference in the turbo variants’ performances. The i20 does get an advantage here but this is just the claimed on-paper mileage, the actual performance can only be reviewed after a road-test.

Looks
Although there isn’t a direct comparison between the looks, there might be one important thing to note about the looks. The Hyundai Venue is inspired by the Carlino concept of the automaker which was unveiled back in 2016. So more or less, the Venue adopts quite an old design language of the automaker known as Fluidic Sculpture 2.0. But the 3rd-gen i20 adopts the automaker’s latest Sensuous Sportiness design language and it does try to stay ahead of time.
Features
Although the i20 would definitely overtake its not-so-old cousin, it still might be important to address the differences. The 3rd-gen i20 sports blue ambient light, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 50+ Bluelink connected features (including voice control wake up command, navigation, remote engine/AC start), Bose 7-speaker stereo system, air purifier, puddle lamps, wireless charging, dual-Bluetooth, electric sunroof and much more.
The Venue, on the other hand, comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluelink, Arkamys sound mood, electric sunroof, rear ac vents, air purifier, and the likes of those up for offer.
Safety
The Hyundai i20 comes with a comprehensive safety package that includes 6 airbags, ESC (electronic stability control), VSM (vehicle stability management), ESS (emergency stop signal), hill assist, tyre pressure monitoring display and rear camera with dynamic guidelines. The i20 is also built on K-platform with 66% high strength steel.
The Hyundai Venue comes with 6-airbags, VSM, hill assist, ESC, ABS with EBD, high strength steel and advanced high strength steel platform, rear parking assist, cornering lamp, auto headlamps with escort function, speed-sensing door locks and impact sensing door locks.
The Hyundai i20 and the Venue go neck-and-neck in all the segments. But it is quite clear that the Venue relies more on its performance than its looks and the creature comforts offered. Whereas the i20, has good looks, decent performance figures, creature comforts and everything in between them. Hyundai i20 is that upgrade which Venue required to keep up with the times.
