Honda Cars India Ltd has been contemplating the introduction of a hybrid powertrain for its City in India for quite a long time. Now, the Japanese manufacturer has finally confirmed that the Honda City e:HEV Hybrid is all set to be launched in the country on April 14. The company has released a new teaser video on its official YouTube channel confirming the launch.
While the teaser video comes with no specific details, it does hint at the fact that the electric hybrid powertrain might only be reserved for the range-topping ZX trim, currently priced at Rs 15.18 lakh (ex-showroom) – which also means that it will be positioned above the top-end model. What’s more, the Honda City ZX e:HEV boasts a new lip spoiler on the tailgate. No major design changes are expected to be made to the hybrid version, however, it could also sport new alloy wheels apart from the spoiler.
The Honda City’s hybrid system will make use of two powerful electric motors mated to a 1.5-litre Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine – one working as an electric generator, while the other would be a propulsion motor. The Honda City hybrid could have a fuel efficiency of around 25 – 26 kmpl, which will make it the most efficient car in its class.
It should be noted that the hybrid powertrain that the Honda City will be equipped with is different from the mild-hybrid tech we’ve seen on mass-market cars so far. The 98 PS 1.5-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine will be aided by an electric motor that puts out 109 PS. However, Honda is yet to reveal the exact combined power and torque figures of the hybrid powertrain of the City e:HEV.
The Honda City hybrid is also expected to be equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking. More details about the hybrid sedan will be confirmed at the launch. Stay tuned to our website and The Times of India – Auto social media handles for further updates on the upcoming Honda City e:HEV.
