Based on the eleventh-generation Civic revealed last year, Honda has now introduced the high-performance Civic Type R in North America. Honda claims that the new 2023 Civic Type R is the most powerful model in the car’s 30-year history, and has been “engineered from the ground up to deliver thrilling performance with an addictive driving experience – both on road and on the racetrack.”
It is not only the most powerful Type R ever, but also the fastest and most powerful Honda car ever in the North American region. The new 2023 Civic Type R recently set a new production-car front-wheel drive track record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan, home to the Formula 1 Honda Japanese Grand Prix 2022. The new Type R lapped the 3.6-mile circuit in 2:23.120.
Powering the new Civic Type R is a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine which is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission and gets a rev-matching system. While Honda has decided to stay hush-hush about the exact specifications of the new Type R, we believe it will feature improved figures over the model it replaces.
With that said, the previous-gen Civic Type R’s powertrain put out 306 horsepower and 400 Nm torque, helping the car launch from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. Talking about the design, the Type R is longer, wider and lower than the regular Civic. It gets more prominent fenders that flare out over the lighter multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in wider tires.
At the front, the Civic Type R gets a more aggressive front bumper with a sporty-looking honeycomb grille mesh. Larger front fender grilles and a new side sill design behind the front wheels enhances airflow efficiency. The sports-oriented car also gets wider rear doors exclusive to Type R, a large rear spoiler, and a reshaped rear bumper with the signature three round exhaust outlets, along with a new rear diffuser.
The interior bits include red racing seats, carpet and trim, as well as a serialized Type R plate that is placed on the dash. There’s a new +R driving mode exclusive meter design allows the driver to obtain necessary information with a graphic engine rpm display, rev indicator lights, and gear position indicator placed at the top. A lower multi-information display can show vehicle information selected by the driver. Other key features include a stopwatch to record lap times and the ability to share driving videos.
